Smart Motion Sensors.

Smart motion sensors have a variety of security applications for detecting motion and alert homeowners when they are away. Motion sensors become an extra pair of eyes for you, they can alert you if there is movement within your home, or if your doors or windows have been opened or closed., alerting you to unwanted activity in your home. They can also be used to trigger home automations, like turning on/off the lights when someone walks into, or out of a room.

Motion sensors are also great for helping to save energy. These sensors can be connected to lighting or the thermostat to help control the energy usage in a room based on the occupancy of the room e.g. it will turn the lights out if no one is in the room or adjust to an energy efficient temperature when the room is unoccupied. For example, you could have a security camera on your back deck that has a motion sensor built in. If that camera detects motion anytime past 11 PM not only will the camera start recording but it will also turn on the back deck light!.

There are many more outdoor applications involving triggering lights on and off  (video capture inclusive) when people walk around the proximity of your home or property. This can be a good security measure and just nice to have at night.

Not all motion sensors use the same technology. Here, is a quick overview of the different types of motion sensors you can use:

• MicroWave Sensors (MW). The sensor sends out microwave pulses to measure the reflection off moving objects. They cover a larger area than the infrared sensors, yet they are expensive and vulnerable to electrical interference.

• Passive Infrared Sensors (PIR). Detects body heat (infrared energy) by looking for changes in temperatures. These are the most widely used sensors for home security. They detect heat and movement creating a protective grid – if a moving object blocks multiple grid zones and the infrared energy levels change, the sensors are tripped.

• Dual Technology Motion Sensors. Dual technology motion sensors use multiple technologies, such as passive infrared (PIR) plus Microwave (MW) – an active sensor, to monitor an area. Both sensors must be tripped in order to trigger the alarm helping to reduce the instances of false alarms.

• Ultrasonic Sensors. Sends out pulses of ultrasonic waves and measures the reflection off a moving object.

• Area Reflective Sensors. Emits infrared rays from an LED. Using the reflection of those rays, the sensor measures the distance to the person or object and detects if the object is within the designated area.

• Video Motion Sensors. Many security cameras use advanced signal processing to start recording when they sense motion. Cameras controlled by motion sensors can save on memory storage (not recording hundreds of hours - they only capture the important things).

• Vibration Sensors. Detects vibration and measures the amount and frequency of vibration in a given system, machine, or piece of equipment. There are two main sensor types in this category – the accelerometer and the Piezoelectric device.
